Biometric-Based Security with Sub-Second Response Times Demonstration at FOSE Altarus Together with Biocentric Solutions Inc., Delivers Biometric-Based Application over Secure Wirelessly Networks FOSEWASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 19, 2002Altarus Corporation, a leading provider of pervasive computing platforms, announced today a biometric-based security solution with sub-second response times over wireless networks. Altarus is working with Biocentric Solutions, Inc. (BSI) to deliver sound security applications for wireless environments. FOSE, one of the most comprehensive technology events serving the government market, takes place at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center, March 1921, 2002. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the Wireless Pavilion, booth #745 for a product demonstration. The world has been launched into a new security-oriented era while at the same time demanding more and more flexibility. To maximize mobile opportunities, agencies must be equipped with the right tools to quickly, accurately, and securely access information from remote locations—biometrics is just one of these emerging tools. Biometric-based security, like fingerprinting, face recognition, and iris scan, is one of the new technologies attracting a great deal of interest for securing sensitive data. What makes biometrics unique is that it is the only type of security that can perform positive, direct authentication of a person since virtually any unique trait can be used as a biometric identifier. Altarus will be simulating an airport security checkpoint using a Compaq iPAQ™ pocket PC and BSI's BioSentry™. BSI designs fingerprint biometric hardware and software solutions to assure secure access to physical and wireless environments. The BioSentry is a fingerprint verification device. Altarus offers rapid application development tools and a platform for creating and deploying secure enterprise applications for wireless local area networks. Using general purpose equipment, the joint demonstration will show authentication of a user for the iPAQ by using a fingerprint. The demonstration will also scan user's fingerprints against a database of suspected terrorists. This partnership is of great significance because together we provide the total mobile security solution for the iPAQ user: BSI secures identity and access at the device level and Altarus at the transmission level, said Cathy Schaub, Vice President, Marketing for Biocentric Solutions Inc. We are excited to provide a solid biometric-based solution focused on home-land security with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products, said Chris Hill, Vice President of Business Development for Altarus. Altarus provides a communications development platform for use by application developers where speed, reliability, efficiency, and security matter. Today's fingerprint authentication demonstration with BSI uses Altarus' highly-secure, performance optimized communication development environment. This was necessitated by the need for rapid response and security over a wireless network to address the needs of home-land security, said Hill. We used general purpose equipment to deliver an out of the box security application for system integrators and value added resellers for the federal government. The Altarus security model is compliant and will receive full Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and its affiliated labs by Q2 2002. As a first step in this process, Altarus' Triple DES encryption algorithm is currently on the NIST Validation List at http://csrc.nist.gov/cryptval/des/tripledesval.html.
